Timeline for Applying to Graduate School

Applying to graduate school is a lengthy process that begins well before application time. Your graduate school application is the culmination of years of study and preparation.   What You Need to Do (and When) for Grad School Applications Heres a handy checklist to help you keep track of what you need to do and when. First, Second, and Third Years of College In your first and second year of college, your choice of major, courses and out-of-class experiences influence the quality of your application. Research and applied experiences can be important sources of experience, material for admissions essays, and sources of recommendation letters. Throughout college, focus on obtaining mentoring and other experiences that will let faculty get to know you. Letters of recommendation from faculty hold a great deal of weight in graduate school admissions decisions. Spring Prior to Applying to Grad School In addition to obtaining research and applied experiences and maintaining a high GPA, plan on taking the necessary standardized tests for admissions. You will either take the GRE, MCAT, GMAT, LSAT, or DAT, depending on what your program requires. Take the necessary standardized exam early so that you have time to retake it if needed.   Summer/September Prior to Attending Grad School If you havent done so already, take the GRE or other standardized exam needed for admission.Gather information about graduate programs online. Review department websites, peruse faculty web pages and examine program curricula and requirements. Narrow your choices.Consider which faculty members to ask for letters of recommendation. September/October Research sources of financial aid.Carefully examine each of the program applications. Note any questions or essay topics that will require your attention.Write a draft of your graduate admissions essay.Ask a faculty member or the career/grad admissions counselor at your school to read your essays and provide feedback. Take their advice!Ask faculty for letters of recommendation. Provide faculty with a copy of your transcript, links to program information and forms (all clearly labeled in one email), and your admissions essay.   Ask faculty if theres anything else that you can provide to help them. November/December Arrange for your official transcript to be sent to each program to which you apply. Visit the Registrars office to request your transcript. Request that the Registrar hold your transcript until the Fall semester grades are in (unless the application is due December 1, which is common).Finalize your admissions essay. Dont forget to seek additional input from others.Apply for fellowships and other sources of financial aid, as applicable.Check and record the due date for each application. December/January Complete the application for each program. Most will be online. Through this, we can come to a better understanding of the meaning of the passages by studying the authorship, time period, the setting, and the people to whom it was written. In Ezekiel 36:22-32, Ezekiel prophesies about the restoration of Israel and delivers God’s promises to the people of Israel. In this analysis, we seek to understand what meaning these prophecies and the text have in the setting of the Old Testament. A director cannot bind the company by his acts on behalf of the company unless he is expressly given the authority by the board to do so. But in the instant case the constitution of the company lays down that a contract of an amount more than $10,000, which has received approval of the board by a resolution passed and has been executed by at least two directors, will be binding on the company. Here, the contract which was entered into by Bob on behalf of the company with Computer Supplies Pty Ltd for delivery of ten computers was a contract for $8,000, an amount which is less than $10,000 as was required by the constitution of the company. The constitution of the company does not makes any provision regarding the contracts of amount smaller than $10,000, therefore, it is presumed that the directors had authority to act on behalf of the company for cases otherwise. Further the Corporations Act also lays down that if a third party enters into a contract with the company where there are more than one directors, the former has right to make an assumption that the latter has been authorized to act on behalf of the company and that all the requirements of the constitution and the law has been complied with[3]. Also the third party has the right to make an assumption that the director who is representing the company is duly appointed and authorized by the members of the company to make such appearance on behalf of the company[4]. In the instant case also the company is registered with the ASIC and therefore the Computer Supplies Pty Ltd has right to make an assumption that Bob was duly authorized to enter into contracts on behalf of the company. As per the observations made above it can be concluded that for the contract that was entered into by Bob on behalf of the company was a valid contract as under Section 129 he is presumed to be authorized by the company to enter into contracts with third parties and therefore, the Sunshine Scooter Art Pty Ltd is bound by the contract and the directors are advised to make payment of $8,000 on behalf of the company to the Computer Supplies Pty Ltd for the supply of ten computers made by the latter to the former. The contract that has been entered into by Bob on behalf of the company with Plastica Pty Ltd for $50,000 is not a binding contract. The reason that can be given for the conclusion is that firstly, according to the law that has been laid down in the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) except in cases where a contrary contract has been entered into by the parties, a company which has more directors than one and any contract has been entered into on behalf of such company, such contract can be enforced only if it has been signed by at least two directors of such company[5]. Further as per the rules laid down by different courts if there are more than one director in a company and a director is acting independently, he has no authority to bind the company by virtue of his position[6]. A director can bind the company by his acts only if he has been given an express authority by the board to do so. Also according to the constitution of the company in the instant case a contract of an amount more than $10,000 will be executable and binding on the company only if such contract has received approval of the board by a resolution passed for the purpose and has been signed by at least two directors of the company. Here, the contract which was entered into by Bob on behalf of the company with Plastica Pty Ltd for an amount of $50,000 was not made in accordance with the requirement of the constitution of the company as no resolution was signed by the directors to enter into any such contract and neither did Bob was given any implied or express authority for making contracts on behalf of the company. Further, it should be noted that Bob represented himself as the sole director of the company, which he was not. Section 129 of the said Act entitles a third party who is entering into a contract with the company to make an assumption with regard to the authority of a director of the said company only in case where the contract has been signed according to the provision as laid down in s ection 127. Here, in the instant case the contract has not been entered into by Bob accordingly. Therefore, on the basis of the observations made above it is concluded that the contract that was entered into by Bob on behalf of the company with Plastica Pty Ltd was not a valid contract as Bob made a misrepresentation that he was the sole director of the company and also the contract was not made in compliance with the constitution of the company. The contract with the Plastica Pty Ltd was not binding on the company and therefore neither the company, Sunshine Scooter Art Pty Ltd nor its other two directors, Jana and Adrian can be made personally liable for the act of Bob as his act was not authorized, either expressly or impliedly, and therefore he will be personally liable for his act. Superdry Holdings Ltd is the holding company of Superdry Manufacturing Ltd and Superdry Retail Stores Ltd. The board of directors of the Holdings, viz., Francis, Jack and Alice hold shares in the company in ratio of 5:3:2. The Holding holds 70% shares in the Manufacturing while 30% shares in the Stores. These three companies are considered to be group of companies by the directors. According to law a company is considered to be a subsidiary of another where the holding company holds at least 50% shares of the subsidiary company[7]. Here in this case, Holdings has 70% shares of Manufacturing while only 30% shares of the Stores, therefore, Manufacturing is a subsidiary of the Holdings but Stores cannot be said to be the subsidiary of the Holdings as the latter holds less than 50% shares in the former. The Stores is not related to the Holdings and the Manufacturing as the former is not a subsidiary of the latter companies although Manufacturing is related to the Holdings[8]. Also as per the facts of this case Stores, which has a chain of its retail stores, sells the products of the Manufacturing at reduced rates and in a recent past has also started selling products of other brands which have more demand than the Manufacturings products. According to these facts, it can be concluded that the Stores is a separate entity from Holdings and Manufacturing as when Stores started selling products of other brands, the latter did not stop them from doing so. This conduct of the latter shows that they do not have a substantial control over the day-to-day business of the Stores. Further it has also been held by court that a parent company and a subsidiary company of the former are distinct legal entities. Therefore, they are not bound by each others legal obligations[9]. From this observation of the court, it can be suggested that the decision made in the meeting of the Board of Directors of Stores, where the Stores is required to provide guarantee to the Finance B ank of the debts of Holdings and Manufacturing, is not bound to give such guarantee as has been held above that a company is not bound by the legal obligations of the other even if it is a subsidiary company of the other. In the instant case, the directors of the Holdings are personally liable for the debts accruing to the Financial Bank. They cannot make Stores bound by their legal obligation as Stores is a separate legal entity distinct from the Holdings and the Manufacturing. Further, the decision made by the Directors in the Board meeting is in contravention of the directors duty under law[10]. The directors of a company are under a legal obligation not to take advantage of their position or cause disadvantage to the company[11]. Also the Business Judgment Rule which is intended to evade needless limitations on appropriate business activities has also been laid down in the Corporations Act 2001. According to the rule a director should make a proper business judgment which requires care and diligence on his part while making such judgment. A judgment is said to be made carefully and diligently when it is made with bona fide intention for an appropriate purpose and should not have a substantial interest in the issue of the judgment. Further the judgment shall also be made in the interest of the company[12]. The basic objective of the rule is to prevent the directors of the company from exercising their powers arbitrarily and not to shield them from their l iability. It has been held by court that the duty that has been imposed under section 182 is not made to ensure obedience to the requirements of the provisions of the law rather to avoid the directors from taking advantage of their authority for their personal interest[13]. The directors cannot delegate their responsibilities to other members of the company[14]. The directors of Holdings cannot escape from their liability towards the company and the Financial Bank by making the Stores the guarantor for the overdraft facility to the Financial Bank. They are bound by the obligations by the virtue of their position. The directors have no right to give away their obligations their subsidiary company which is not even their subsidiary company. It may be observed that the directors have acted in contravention of their general duties under section 182 of the Corporation Act which invites the civil penalty under section 1317E. The court upon being satisfied that the director has acted in contravention of the civil penalty provision, it will declare that such contravention has taken place. Upon declaration the Australian Securities and Investments Commission will be entitled to get an order for pecuniary penalty under section 1317G or an order for disqualification under section 206C. Therefore it is advised to Karen, the non- executive director of Stores that the three directors of the Holdings for failing to carry out their general duties and thereby contravening the provisions of Corporations Act. The directors want to avoid their personal liability as against the Financial Bank by making the Stores guarantor for their overdue debts and the overdraft facilities. The Stores is not a part of the Holdings or the Manufacturing rather it does not even form part of the group of the company as given under section 50 of the Corporations Act 2001. The Store has a separate legal entity as distinguished from the Holding and the Manufacturing and therefore it cannot be bound by the decisions of the Holdings. The duties of the directors as discussed here above are their equitable duties whereby they have duties of loyalty and to act carefully and diligently while acting on behalf of the company. Under these duties the directors are required not to act arbitrarily while exercising their discretion. Whether a person is robbing a place of business or an individual, they are committing a crime against society and robbing people of their sense of safety and security. When someone chooses to bring a weapon while they are committing a crime, their intentions are to intimidate and control their victims, or to injure them. Policymakers continuously work on bills that try to deter people from committing rimes and reduce the recidivism rate of offenders. When a person decides to commit a crime such as armed robbery, there is a level of free will involved. Most of the time a person is not forced into committing a robbery, but chooses to be involved with the incentive of financial gain. There are many people in society that struggle to make ends meet and work tirelessly to provide for their families. There are choices to be made when people find themselves in these situations. Right and wrong are inherent in the nature of things. (University of Phoenix, (201 1), p. 1). Armed robbery would fit in the category of being considered wrong, no matter what the circumstances involved are. (University of Phoenix, (2011)). The part of this type of crime that may not be associated with free will, is the rationale behind it or ability to make rational choices. Sometimes a person chooses to commit a crime early on in t heir life and studies have shown that the part of a young persons brain that controls impulsively, has not yet had a chance to fully develop. Yet criminologist psychological search shows that, Problem children are likely to become problem should be given special consideration during their process of facing the Juvenile justice system. There is no clear cut answer that has proven to be successful in regards to young offenders. The questions remain: Is it better to give them a shorter length sentence to give them the opportunity to rehabilitate as they become young adults? Or, due to research that shows they are more likely to commit crimes as adults, Is it a better option to keep them in institutes for a longer period of time to rotten the general public? This factor, along with many other contributing factors, is taken into account by the Judge while they are determining the sentencing of individuals. A bill that will be presented to the state legislature asks that the maximum prison term for anyone convicted of armed robbery be doubled. As a criminologist advisor, my recommendation would be to vote for this bill that is being considered. I have considered that pros and cons of the bill and feel that the positive affects of the bill outweigh the negative. Publicizing the punishment involved in a rime such as armed robbery, may deter people from being involved in this type of violent act. Increasing the maximum sentence for violent, weapon involved crimes can keep citizens that choose to follow the law safe from people who choose not to. There have been numerous theories developed on why people choose to break the law, but the bottom line is that they do and they must face the consequences for their decisions. The psychological elements that play a role in why a person decides to commit a crime are important in the area of deterrence. Adding mandatory years o the sentence for committing a crime such as armed robbery, may be a positive attribute to the prevention of future crimes of this kind. Psychologically, a person considering a life of crime might be convinced not to if they understand the extensive punishment they face if they do. (Schmeltzer, (2012), p. 143). Being involved with Community-based programs is sometimes part of the sentence imposed by a Judge. Many times these types of programs involve intensive therapy, Job-skill training and substance abuse counseling. These are positive options that may be encouraging ND helpful to offenders who most likely need assistance in one or all of these areas. If there was a way to incorporate these services into the institutions that inmates were serving their sentence in, this would be ideal. Punishment for crimes committed is a necessary part of the checks and balances process but adding services that can assist offenders in becoming productive members of society one day, is helpful. As a criminologist advisor, I do believe that the bill doubling the maximum prison term for anyone convicted of armed robbery should be supported.

It takes the current of one voltage and converts it into a different voltage. The amount of transferred energy from Primary circuit to the Secondary Circuit is equal, and the losses are ignored. The frequency of the circuits does not change but the voltage and current of each of the individual circuit is changed, it is increased or decreased, unless we use the transformer as a one-to-one isolating transformer. Basically, the transformer perform the function of changing electricity from high to low voltage by making use of the following properties of electricity. Magnetism is always present around in an electric circuit. Magnetic field is always changed by changing the strength or moving the conductor therefore voltage is induced. Voltage is known as the measure of the Force or Pressure that is used to push the electrons around the circuit. Electricity at a higher voltage goes in the transformer and runs through the large number of coils that are wounded around the iron core. As the current is changing, the core magnetism will also be changing. A wire with less coils around the iron core is known as the output wire and the changing magnetism produces current in the wire. When the number of coils are less that means less voltage and more coils means more voltage. Therefore, the voltage is either stepped down or stepped up according to the number of coils in the wire. A common transformer involves a ferromagnetic core which ensures that values of magnetic flux linkage remain high. But there are some factors related to the ferromagnetic materials that are responsible for part of the loss associated with power transfer. These losses are as follows: 1. Core losses: Core losses can be classified as the sum of eddy currents losses and the hysteresis loss. Hysteresis loss: Energy that a magnetic material soaks in cannot be recovered completely. Core of the material is excited by an A.C source, the flux density rises and falls with the magnetic field strength or current which is basically sinusoidal. When the magnetizing current increases the flux density also increases but there comes a point after which if there is any further increase in the current, flux density is saturated. If the current is reduced from the saturation point to zero, flux density will start to decrease. When the value of the current reaches upto zero the flux density should also become zero but it does not become equal to zero. Some of the flux density will still be present in the material for the zero current, which is called as a residual magnetic flux. Thus, the total amount of energy used to magnetize the material cannot be recovered back and this energy is trapped within the material core and is dissipated as a form of heat. Area of B/H curve gives the hysteresis loss, larger the loop the greater the energy required to create the magnetic field. Eddy current losses: If a coil is wrapped around a core made up of some material and an A.C source is applied to circuit, eddy current losses take place. As the supply to the coil is changing or alternating which produces an alternating flux in the coil. The varying flux in the core induces e.m.f in the core material due to which eddy currents start to flowing in the core material. Therefore, the energy is lost or dissipated in the form of heat because of eddy currents. The laminations in the core can reduce the eddy current losses. Thin sheet steels which are separated from each other must be used because these insulated sheets reduce the amount of the current flow and hence the eddy current losses. 2. Copper losses: Copper loss occurs when the transformer is loaded, the input power is dissipated as heat in the primary and secondary windings of the transformer because these windings have internal resistance. When the load is low, the amount of heat produced is small but at high loads the amount of heat produced becomes significant. à ¯Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ · Construction of Single-core three-phase double wound Transformer: A single-core three-phase double wound transformer consists of three sets of primary and secondary windings, individual set winded on each leg of the core made up of iron. The windings consists of turns made up with the insulated wire. These coils are then mounted on a magnetic core material in such a way that the magnetic flux produced by one coil increases and ensures that the most of the magnetic flux links with the second coil so that mutual induction is being increased. The coils are spaced 120 degrees apart. The transformer is filled with a dielectric oil and thus provide insulation in-between the winding and case. These windings are either connected in star or delta configurations. Delta Connection: Delta system proves excellent for distribution system for short distances. These types of transformers are used in neighbourhood and commercial loads of small magnitude near to the substations. There is one kind of voltage present between the 2 wires in the delta system. Power Utilities: When driving through a rural area, power polls and overhead power lines can be seen and transformers are placed on these power polls by power utilities. A laptop charger requires up to 15V while mobile phone charger requires up to 6V and M3 chargers require up to 12V to charge up their batteries. Thus, these appliances have small transformers built in them which convert the domestic supply of 110-240 volts into a low voltage that they require for their operation. à ¯Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ · Power Transmission and Distribution System: Three-phase system is used in power transmission because less amount of conductor is used to transmit electrical energy to different places. Three conductors carry 3 alternating currents peak values of which reach at different intervals of time. If a conductor is taken as a reference point, there is a delay of time by one third and two third of a cycle of the current for the remaining two currents. Because of this delay in the available phases, constant power is transferred over each cycle of current. There can or cannot be a neutral wire in three-phase systems. Neutral wire is used to allow a higher voltage while still supporting the appliances operating at lower single phase voltages. As loads can directly be connected between the phases so there is no neutral current wire in high voltage distribution. There are many factors that make three-phase system very desirable and reliable in electric power systems. In a load which is linearly balanced, the phase currents cancel each other and add up to give a zero which also helps in eliminating the neutral wire. Phase conductor carry same amount of current which means that they all can have a same size of conductor for balanced conditions. Moreover, the transfer of power in the system is constant for a linear system, it reduces the vibrations in a system. à ¯Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ · Generation: Electricity is generated at the power station at around 10kV by rotating a coil in the magnetic field. In power stations, all the generators are synchronised so that they all produce electricity that oscillates together. For more efficient generation, three windings are used on the generator to produce three-phase electricity. Sources for power generation: For distribution, the following types of resources are available for the generation of the electricity. Conventional Methods: Thermal energy: Thermal energy or the Nuclear energy is used to produce steam for the turbines that drives the rotating AC generators to produce electrical energy. Hydro-electric: Potential of water is stored at a higher altitude and is made passed through the turbines which in turn drive the generators. Non-Conventional Methods: Wind power: Winds blowing at high speeds are used to drive the turbines that are coupled to the rotating AC generators. à ¯Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ · Transmission: Transmission has an important role between the production of power and the usage of power. Transmission lines carry high voltage electricity over long distances from power plants to the consumers. Once the power is generated. When the voltage is stepped up, it helps in the reduction of the transmission losses. It is then sent to the grid station from where it is further transmitted to different cities. Why there is a need to step up the voltage for transmission: For transmission over long distances, transmission lines are made up of conducting materials like aluminium and power loss is always associated with these conducting materials. This is because if the current through the wire is I and the resistance of the wire is R then an amount of electrical power I2R is dissipated as heat. This will result in a much less power at the receiving end than the actual power generated at the station. The power grid is connected to the different parts of the country and it distributes the power in different cities through transmission lines. The transmitted power from the power grid is stepped-down to 110,000 volts from 230,000 volts using a step-down auto transformer. The Bronte Sisters

Three children sit in a circle playing with wooden toy soldiers. The world these children play in is not Earth, but worlds of their own creating. The children in this circle will grow up to be some of the best eighteenth century writers. It is no surprise that as a child Emily Bronte and her siblings had active imaginations. They created the worlds of Gondal, Emily and Anne’s creation; and Angria, Charlotte’s creation (White 12). The world does not know much about Emily Bronte except what can be concluded from Charlotte Bronte’s autobiography (Winnitrith 111).She was born July 30, 1818 in Yorkshire, England. At the young age of thirty, Emily developed tuberculosis and died on December 19, 1848 (Magill 56). Her potential had yet to be reached. C. D. Merriman from The Literature Network said, â€Å"Many early works from her past were lost – only 3 personal letters exist from her possessions. † Emily was influenced by many people including her mother a nd father. Her father, Reverend Patrick Bronte, was a school teacher (Magill 56). Patrick Bronte had a humble beginning; he went to Cambridge University and worked in order to pay for his stay.Her father was looked down upon for being middle class in a high-class school. Emily’s stories feature a strong value of education and deal with injustices of society, which is believed to have originated from her father’s troubles. (White 8) â€Å"Emily’s mother, Maria Bronte died from internal cancer when Emily was only three,† according to The Victorian Web (Allingham). Although Emily had a poor experience at school, education became an escape route in many of Emily’s writings (White 5-25). Emily, Charlotte, Anne, and Branwell grew up in Haworth. They didn’t have many neighbors so they had to be content playing with each other and the wooden soldiers their father brought back from a trip (Magill 56). Charlotte and her brother, Branwell created the world of Angria. Emily and Anne Bronte created the world of Gondal.Traces of Gondal have been found throughout Emily’s poems (White 6-34). Philip Allingham reports that Emily’s favorite activities were reading and playing the piano. The Victorian Web states her favorite authors were: Shakespeare, Homer, Virgil, and Aesop. As Emily grew up she worked as a governess in Halifax, Yorkshire. She intensely disliked the experience. She planned with Anne and Charlotte to begin a school for themselves. This dream was never realized because the girls became involved in writing.Barring the fact that Emily Bronte was a private author, her sister Charlotte convinced her to join her and Anne to make a book of poems. Together they made Poems by Currer Ellis and Acton in 1846 (White 38). As an editor, C. W. Hatfield went through Emily’s poems trying to interpret them. The problems arise when trying to figure out the differences between her subjective statements. In addition, the authorship and date is uncertain as well (Winnitrith 33). Poems by Currer Ellise and Acton didn’t get much press, but got two favorable reviews from Athenaeum and Dublin University Magazine (Wilks 111).Philip Allingham writes, â€Å"Emily and her sisters took over pseudonyms to hide their gender because of the many prejudices against women authors. The failure of their poems did not dishearten the girls; it made them write even more which lead Emily to write her best novel, Wuthering Heights. † It is assumed the Wuthering Heights was written in 1846 because of the absence of poetry Emily wrote, yet the length of the novel suggests she started writing even earlier than that.The information that we have about the composition of Wuthering Heights is up to debate because it is in Charlotte’s interpretation and she could have been sensitive about Emily’s choice to go on her own (Winnitrith 47). After the publication of Wuthering Heights in 1847 the public thought it was mimicry of Charlotte’s work. The public was intensely disturbed by the contents and Emily was a cipher to the public (Magill 56-59). â€Å"Emily’s brother, Branwell went through depression and many al cohol induced rages.As a result, he died in 1848, and at his funeral Emily caught a cold and developed tuberculosis,† as said by C. Access to education for these refugee children had a significantly impact their lives and gave them the hope of having many opportunities in life. Currently, I volunteer at Emergency Community Health and Outreach (ECHO) to increase awareness about health and safety issues to recent refugees who immigrated to Minnesota. In March 2013, I collaborated with the Hopkins Fire Department to develop and implement courses on fire safety for these recent immigrants. I consider the refugees that I attended to as being underserved and at risk considering that they had little access to education and other services and yet were more prone to suffering malnutrition, fire disasters, and diseases compared to the general public. Most of the participants in this program had no previous knowledge of fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire, which put this population in potential danger in the wake of a fire emergency. However, having language barrier was a major challenge for them as they were unable to communicate in English. Having interpreters present during the lessons significantly helped some of the refugees. However, there were ma ny participants who had to contend with learning without interpreters. Without interpreters, many of the participants faced a lot of difficulties trying to understand and grasp what taught. Regardless, we successfully educated the refugees. The war in Vietnam was creating problems and therefore the goal of United States was to curb the conflict and not let the conflict turn into a nuclear fight (20). This is why the government actively participated in war so that the conflict can be stopped before serious damages are realized. The changes in Education Essay This week it was announced by ministers that A levels and GCSE`s in secondary schools will be replaced by a Baccalaureate. Baccalaureate exams are already used in France, Germany and the United States of America. The government are hoping to start this system in September 2004. A Levels were first introduced in the 1950`s and GCSE`s were introduced when O levels were phased out in the 1980`s and have caused much discussion and many arguments by Head teachers and Education ministers during the last few years. The education secretary said that A Levels were too narrow and exclusive. If there is going to be an English version of the Baccalaureate it will make things far easier to study at universities abroad because they would understand the qualification that a student in Britain would achieve. Recently AS Levels have been introduced by many schools across the country. This has given a student the opportunity of choosing up to 5 subjects to study for one year and then dropping one or two of these subjects before continuing with the remaining ones. This gives the pupil a much broader education as they are not just studying for the same 3 subjects during the two years of studying. I am not sure if these exams have been a success because everyone moans about them as students have to take continuous examinations. Change at schools must always cause complaints because it is very hard after so many years to adjust to new rules. Heads of schools have to change the way their teachers educate the pupils, and new guidelines have to be carried out nationally. This must be very disruptive during the first couple of years for both students and pupils participating in this scheme, and after the fiasco this year with the marking of them, I do wonder if change is a good thing. Education is changing rapidly, and we will know by the end of the year if the Baccalaureate will definitely be in force. The Baccalaureate will include English, Maths, and Science and then students will be able to choose from a range of academic and practical courses. Work experience will be a must for anyone who takes the exam as will voluntary work. If the baccalaureate is introduced there will be fewer exams and more internal assessment. This will give a student much more of an all round education, and would be more varied on a day to day basis. This would make education much more original and personal, and could be tailor made for each individual pupil. This I am sure would make the normal school day far less boring. I would welcome an opportunity like this. I think every student should participate in voluntary work. This would give everyone a chance to help others and would save money for local councils, as it would have to employ less paid staff. The Baccalaureate will have to be accepted by all the Universities, in England and abroad, especially in Europe, and have the support from future employers, especially those in industry, otherwise this new exam will not work in Britain. It is yet to be decided what it will include. But it will change the way 14 to 19 year olds are taught. Ministers and Headmasters think that this is the most significant way forward and it will be the biggest change education has seen for years. There would be different levels of attainment. As yet they have not decided what these levels will be called but it is likely that they will be along the lines of foundation, intermediate and advanced. Mathematics, English and Science and Information Technology will be compulsory for GCSE and pupils will have to be educated in Sex Education, Physical Education and Religious Education. Pupils will also have to study citizenship. At fourteen years of age pupils will be free to drop many other subjects, which have been compulsory in the National Curriculum, including History, Geography, Art and Music. These subjects will now only be optional. College training will be offered locally on a one or two day a week basis. Day release would also be available to some pupils. With employers so that they could gain skills, which they would never be able to achieve at present at their school. It would also give a pupil the chance to decide if they enjoyed college, wanted to work or pursue a different field all together. I welcome this, and think that the more choices offered the better. If I personally cannot have these choices I hope my younger sister will be able to benefit from the new curriculum. There are big shortages of trained engineers, technicians, hairdressers and plumbers at present and by doing these new regimes of studying, pupils will have a much better chance of future employment. Many students are bored by school education and would welcome the chance to study something more vocational, and maybe this would keep them at school until 19 rather than leaving at 16 with very few qualifications and no prospects of a job. Also if a student enjoys his or her day release, a job might be offered there and then for the participating pupil, and the employer would then be obtaining an apprentice that knew what he was doing. On the other hand employers will only be able to offer a limited number of jobs and this may leave a large percentage of unemployed students with very few qualifications. These work related GCSEs would be renamed and would combine both academic studies and more practical work; they will be tried out across the country in various schools this coming September. Industry will benefit from this as many more students will be trained in the relevant work and not just fresh from a class without any experience. Another change on the way is the way that the league tables for exam results are calculated. It will show the difference between advantaged and disadvantaged pupils at each school. Each school throughout the country will then be awarded a grade from A to E depending on their excellence or their failures. This is meant to be much more understandable and will offer more information to parents choosing schools for their childrens future education. People need to know the correct facts, and by changing the tables slightly, this will offer just that. Before the league tables were started several years ago, it was virtually impossible to obtain information about how well or how badly pupils had faired in their exams at school. So in my opinion the tables have been a great help. Also by printing these tables in all the newspapers, it has been made everyone aware of the academic successes of schools around the country. This also has meant that everyone is aware of the schools that have done very badly academically and this has made the government enforce an improvement during a certain period of time, or they have threatened closure and/or a change of management. This must be good for education in the future. It can only improve schools especially those in disadvantaged areas, where expectations of pupil performance is low. Every student should be aware of poor teaching and academic successes and although it might not always be possible to enter the school of your choice, it will enforce better education at all schools around the country and hopefully the worst offenders will be greatly improved or shut down. All students whether in Independent Education or State Education should be offered the same curriculum with the choice of vocational subjects. Employers must welcome these changes as well. I have enjoyed my education, and am looking forward to furthering it, but would have preferred a much more varied curriculum. I have a job on a Saturday which has given me an insight into retail, and have secured work experience in a large organisation in the summer which will be very interesting for me. But although I know I want to study art I have no idea in which area I would like to continue and if I had been able to study in a more practical manner, maybe I would be more knowledgeable, and more able to progress in the appropriate area.
